This photo was taken at Nicklas & Ingunn's Wedding in Sweden in 2006.
Helen and Leigh have both been involved in dogs since 1983. Since that time, Helen has always had Afghans but Leigh started with English Foxhounds and Beagles under the Casualeigh prefix and moved into Afghans in 1996. In line with Leigh's very flamboyant personality, he was always envious of the elegance and glamour of the coated breeds and in particular Afghans. This move probably would have occurred much sooner except still living with his parents, Leigh had to respect their wishes not to bring home one of those "hairy dogs"!

Helen and her husband at the time Gary, bred under the Karakush prefix. Our original stock was based mainly on Khandhu lines with Paul & Pauline Hewitt mentoring us through the early years. In 1989, we leased Khandhu Trapeze (a Ch Raushan Copa Cabana daughter) from Paul and Pauline and we put her to the very beautiful Ch Kelzarki Blue Spruce (owned by Nan Carter and bred by Les Bradney & Tom Tancred) and the rest is history. This litter gave us the world renowned, Ch Karakush Irresistable U, Ch Karakush True Blue, Ch Karakush Whata Rascal and Ch Karakush Playing To Win. The first three are behind all Karakush stock today.

Leigh was extremely successful with his promotion of Gr Aus & Am Ch Tahkira Hell Raiser - "Lucky" (by True Blue) including having campaigned Lucky in both Australia and the USA very successfully. During this time Leigh was extremely supportive of the Karakush lines and it became a natural progression that Leigh became a partner in Karakush in March 1999.

Helen & Leigh continue to produce Afghans of beautiful type and temperament under the Karakush prefix. We are very concerned with breed hallmark details, in particular beautiful heads and hard toplines with prominent hipbones, distinct croups and correct tail sets whilst not losing the springy movement that Karakush is renowned for.

Because Afghans are a high maintenance breed, it is only possible for us to prepare and present a limited number in the proper condition, so we are very fortunate to have the friendship and assistance of Luke & Kylie Kavanagh, Danny & Tash Wilson, Gonz Donoso & Tim Gardner, Jodie Greig, Ruth & Jeremy Cook, Bev Houston, Kerin & Rachel Hutchings,  Tiffany Heares. They often nurture our puppies in the early years with initial training and socialisation and of course many Karakush Afghans continue to live with them.
We are very proud of the achievements of Grand Aust Am Can Grand Ind Ch Karakush In Champagne. We sent him to be campaigned in the USA & Canada where he won and All Breeds BIS from the classes at his first Show. He earned his Am & Can Championships with ease and came home with 5 BIS's! He has won a total of 44 BIS's including the ultimate - BIS at Sydney Royal in 2007! Eric then conquered more of the World by going back to the roots of his ancestors to India where he was campaigned to #1 All Breeds and the very first Indian Grand Champion.
We are also very proud to have won 5 of the past 8 Australian Afghan National Specialties with Ch Karakush Irresistable U, Grand Aust Am Ch Tahkira Hell Raiser, Ch Karakush Spice Of Life, Ch Karakush Defying Gravity & Ch Karakush Kattude.
Dogs have literally become our life! As well as breeding and showing Afghans, Helen & Leigh now married, own a Boarding Kennel & Cattery in the Blue Mountains of Sydney enabling us to enjoy a more layback lifestyle and dedicate as much time as we would like to our own dogs. Our involvement in Afghans has opened the doors to many new acquaintances and friendships all around the world for which we will always be grateful.

As time has gone on, although our hearts are still in Afghans, we have given ourselves the gift of camaigning a couple of other breeds. We have imported "Sven" a saluki from Qirmizi in Sweden and "Albert" a Wire Fox Terrier from AshGrove in Italy. It has been a joy and a lot of fun campaigning these boys.
Since Helen became licensed to judge the entire Hound Group (Sighthound & Scenthounds), she has been fortunate enough to judge Specialties in the USA, Finland, Sweden and New Zealand along with several Hound Group and Breed Specialty appointments here in Australia. Helen looks forward to future judging assignments in other countries around the world.
